Gallery Type

About

Gallery Type is a type foundry by designers for designers. We are rooted in a deep understanding of branding processes and contemporary visual culture.

We understand the role type plays in shaping visual identities because we have been doing it ourselves for more than 15 years. Our typefaces balance form with function, beauty with utility and reflect the essence of modern and timeless design.

Gallery Type offers a carefully selected library of retail fonts. We also work closely with agencies and brands to craft exclusive, custom typefaces that not only help to sharpen brand identities, but also resonate deeply with a brand’s values.

We believe in the power of networks. That’s why we collaborate with internationally recognized font engineers, type designers, designers and artists to ensure the highest level of quality. Whether you’re looking for a custom typeface or a standout retail font, Gallery Type is your trusted partner.

Licensing fonts should be easy and transparent. That’s why Gallery Type offers one of the easiest licensing models in the industry. Our model calculates licensing fees based on just two metrics:
❶ — the total number of employees of the end-user (=your client)
❷ — the location of the licensee
You don’t have to gather any other information about web traffic, app downloads, etc.
Plain simple, that’s our licensing model. Go on, pick your fonts and have fun. 😊

However, if you want to know more about the details and the reasons, read further:

One for All

Font licenses used to be calculated by the number of people working with them in the client’s organization. But imagine a large industrial company with many departments, where only a small number of employees actually work on a computer (= the marketing department). Compare this to a small software company, where all employees work on a computer. See the difference? Relatively speaking, the small institution ends up paying far more than the big company.

Working as graphic designers ourselves for many years we know about the pitfalls and difficulties of font licensing. Being asked to provide not only the number of seats (for desktop fonts), but also the number of page views, clicks, bandwidth or the number of app downloads is sometimes either hard to predict or confusing because even the client has to look up these exact metrics.

That’s why we got rid of all of these minute details and decided to base our licensing system only on one metric: the size of the company of the License Owner.

Who is the license owner?

If you are a design/development studio you are usually licensing our fonts on behalf of your client – or your client licenses their font on themselves. So, technically speaking, your client is the end-user of our fonts and therefore in need of a proper license. However, if you have done the licensing and licensed a font on behalf of client A, you’ll need another license when you work for client B. Because, again, your client is the end-user relevant for calculating the font license.

What is the “Fair Price Adjustment”?

Simplifying our licensing model as much as possible felt like a great improvement compared to how font licenses are currently calculated. But we thought we could not only make it easier, but also fairer.

Imagine two manufacturing companies of the same size, one in Switzerland and the other one in Mexico. The one in Switzerland will likely sell their products at a higher price (i.e. make more profits) than the one in Mexico. Asking both to pay the same for the same font somehow doesn’t feel right.

For a company located in one country a fixed price for a font is usually more/less – relative to their revenue – than for a company located in another. In other words: in countries where prices, salaries and the cost of living are higher, the price for a font should also be higher, in countries with lower prices, the price for a font should be lower. We call this “Fair Price Adjustment” (FPA).

The indicators we use for this are: 1. PA.NUS.PRVT.PP: (PPP conversion factor for private consumption) and 2. PA.NUS.FCRF: (official exchange rate) This combination reflects the average difference in prices for private consumption between countries. Since we are located in Berlin, we use Germany as the neutral benchmark. So, for example, for a company located in Norway the FPA is a multiplier of 1.11, for a company in Mexico the FPA is a multiplier of 0.81.

This “Fair Price Adjustment” is automatically calculated during the checkout process, but can also be changed by entering the details of the license owner.

In a nutshell

Working as graphic designers ourselves for more than 15 years and talking with many other designers, we realized what often makes font licensing so complicated. To make licensing as easy and fair as possible, we designed a completely new licensing and pricing model, that benefits everyone involved: you (the client/the designer) and us (the type foundry)

LICENSING

Licensing fonts should be easy and transparent. That’s why Gallery Type offers one of the easiest licensing models in the industry. Our model calculates licensing fees solely based on two metrics: 1. the total number of employees of the end-user (=your client) and 2. the location of the license-owner (licensee). So, you don’t have to gather any information about your clients web traffic, app downloads, etc.

For more information please have a look at our “Licensing” section.

Most foundries offer different licenses for desktop, web or app use, depending on the number of desktop computers, the page views of the website or app downloads and other metrics. We think that’s too complicated. That’s why we offer straight-forward perpetual licenses for all platforms. One license, unlimited usage. The only thing you have to make sure is that you enter the correct number of employees of the end-user (most likely your client).

If you are a design/development studio you are usually licensing our fonts on behalf of your client—or your client licenses their fonts on themselves. So, technically speaking, your client is the end-user of our fonts and therefore in need of a proper license. However, if you have done the licensing and licensed a font on behalf of client A, you’ll need another license when you work for client B. Because, again, your client is the end-user relevant for calculating the font license.

Yes you can, you just need to fill in your client’s company details at the checkout process. However, you can also prepare a cart with the font and license selection and send it to your client for them to finalize the order. To do so, use the “Share Cart” button in your cart page.

The employee count is the total number of employees of the end-user. This includes subcontractors. For example, a client company with 50 employees works with a design agency of 10 employees. The correct license therefore is calculated as 50+10=60 employees.

No.
Just imagine a large industrial company with many departments, where only a small number of employees actually work on a computer (= the marketing department). Compare this to a small software company, where all employees work on a computer. See the difference? The small institution ends up paying far more than the big company.

No. Just make sure, the number of employees is calculated correctly (see “Who counts as an employee?”)

Yes, you can share them with as many subcontractors as you want, as long as they only use the fonts for projects on your behalf and the said contractors are factored into your employee number.

No worries. If the employee count increases by more than 20% past your license tier, just upgrade to the next tier, and your client will cover the difference. So, if your client’s company has grown from 80 to 130 employees, you’ll need a new license. Of course, your client only needs to pay for the difference. To update, please contact us at info@gallerytype.com

That’s fairly easy. The price of your previously bought styles will be subtracted from your new order. To do so, please email us at info@gallerytype.com

PRICING

Apart from the number of employees of a client, the only metric used to calculate the price of our fonts is a multiplier we call the “Fair Price Adjustment”. For a company located in country A 70€ for a font is more—relative to their revenue—than for a company located in country B (or less, depending on the country). In other words: in countries where prices, salaries and the cost of living are higher, the price for a font should also be higher, in countries with lower prices, the price for a font should be lower. This is what we call “Fair Price Adjustment” (FPA).

The indicator we use for this is the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), as provided by the World Bank. We use two different indicators, to be precise: 1. PA.NUS.PRVT.PP: (PPP conversion factor for private consumption) and 2. PA.NUS.FCRF: (Official exchange rate) This combination reflects the average difference in prices for private consumption between countries. For more information please have a look at our “Licensing” section.

Sure. Usually, the final price for a font license is automatically calculated during the checkout process, but can also be changed by entering the details of the license owner in the respective fields.

PAYMENT

We offer credit card payments through Stripe, the de-facto-industry-standard for online payments. Should you encounter any problems, please contact us: info@gallerytype.com

Not officially. But if e.g. PayPal is your only available option, configure your order at the checkout page and then email us, we’ll send you further details.

LANGUAGE SUPPORT

By default, all of our fonts offer language support for most Latin-based languages. On both, the font detail page as well as the specimen PDF you’ll find a list of supported languages as well as the full character set.

Sure, we work with an international network of specialists to extend the language support of any of our fonts with the script of your choice. Please reach out to us to discuss details: info@gallerytype.com

SUPPORT, MODIFICATIONS AND CUSTOMIZATION

We offer OTF for desktop and WOFF2 for web fonts, as well as TTF files on request. Our variable fonts come as TTF (desktop) and WOFF2 files (web)

Yes, on request we can also send you TTF files of our fonts.

Yes! You can download all our fonts as fully functional trial fonts. All characters, all Opentype features, no restrictions. However, the suffix TRIAL will remind you that you have to buy a license after testing our fonts in your design. Of course, just like all fonts offered by Gallery Type, all of our trial fonts are subject to the End-User License Agreement [EULA].

There are various strategies to calculate the vertical metrics of a font. We use a strategy that’s similar to the one specified in the current Google specifications. It’s the best way to ensure a leading that is best suitable across a multitude of applications: neither too loose nor too tight so that accents won’t get cut off.

Short answer: No. Long answer: No, you are not allowed to modify, change or redistribute our fonts.

Sure. Just reach out to us to discuss the details: info@gallerytype.com

Of course you can. We can modify an existing Gallery Type font to make it perfectly suited for your needs—or we can create a tailor-made custom font for you. Please reach out: info@gallerytype.com

Yes. We have a special 80% student discount on all type families and individual styles. Please get in touch: info@gallerytype.com

This End User License Agreement (EULA) is a legal agreement made between Gallery Type / Daniel Perraudin, Brunowstraße 57, 13507 Berlin and you, the Licensee.

This Agreement governs the terms of use of the Font Software and the design of the Fonts, from now on referred to as Font, in any media, printed materials, electronic documents, artwork, web services, app and any other material that may be associated with the product now or in the future. For the purposes of the License, ‘Font’ shall be defined as the design of the Fonts together with the Font Software in which all typographic elements are contained. Font shall further comprise all bitmap and/or outline representations of typeface and typographic elements created by or derived from the Font.

1

ACTORS

At Gallery Type, the licensee is the company, the end-user who’s using the Font for the communication of their brand. In this license, they will be called the “Licensee”. Any external designer or agency producing design work for the Company will be called the “Designer”.

2

GRANT OF LICENSE

Upon payment in full of the non-refundable license fee, Gallery Type grants the Licensee a non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the Font Software, subject to all of the terms and conditions of this Agreement. Anyone using the Font agrees de facto to the terms of this contract. The Licensee is granted only the rights expressly stated in this Agreement and on the basis of the provided number of employees of the Company.

3

COMPANY SIZE

At the time of purchase, the person placing the order (be it the Designer, a Marketing Manager or someone else) is asked to provide the name of the Company the font will be used by and for (e.g. the Licensee). By doing so, they testify the information filled in the license is correct and that the Licensee agrees to the License terms.

The Company Size means how many people work for the Licensee’s company (employees and sub-contractors included). Any freelancer or sub-contractor should be counted in their employee number.

If the Licensee’s employee number grows more than 20% past the upper limit of the license tiers they chose at the time of purchase, they’ll need to update their license to the tiers directly above. Please contact us at info@gallerytype.com for such update. If the Licensee doesn’t comply to this update, Gallery Type will terminate their license.

4

COMPANY COUNTRY OF ACTIVITY

The only other metric used to calculate the license fee apart from the number of employees is the country of residence of the Company. Our Fair Price Adjustment model takes into account the Licensee’s country of residence to adjust the price in a fairer way. You testify that the address and country filled in the order are the ones of the registered head office of the Licensee.

In the event of Gallery Type discovering a misleading or wrong information regarding the Licensee’s address, Gallery Type keeps to right to either charging the difference of price with the Licensee’s actual country of residence OR terminating the Licensee’s license without further notice.

No additional fees will ever be charged in the event of the Licensee registered head office moving countries.

5

SUBCONTRACTOR

This license covers any Subcontractor (Designer or Studio) hired by the Licensee to execute design work for them. As such, the Licensee should include the number of said Subcontractors in the total of their employees to choose their license tiers at the moment of purchase.

6

VARIABLE FONTS

All purchases of a full type family grant you free additional access to a variable font covering the styles bought. Even though Variable fonts have already been introduced in 2016, they are still not fully supported in every environment, their performance can vary depending on the context. Gallery Type’s variable fonts are provided as if and without any warrantees.

7

LICENSE COVERAGE

Gallery Type grants the Licensee the right to use the Fonts in every environment. We offer straight-forward perpetual licenses for all platforms. One license, unlimited usage, no subscription. This is our All-In-One Standard license that covers 90% of cases.

More specifically, Gallery Type grants the Licensee:

The Licensee is allowed to distribute the Font Software as an embedded file within the App and distribute copies of the App with the embedded Font Software. The embedding technology shall exclude the App end-user direct access to the embedded Font Software in order to prevent it from being downloaded for any other use than within the App. When distributed within the App, the embedded Font Software shall by all means be protected against installation in the App end-user’s operating system.
  • the right to embed the Font within an unlimited amount of Hardware, such as smart objects, screens, phones, cars, if owned and developed by the company. The Licensee is allowed to distribute the Font Software as an embedded file within the Hardware and distribute copies of the Hardware with the embedded Font Software. The embedding technology shall exclude the Hardware end-user direct access to the embedded Font Software in order to prevent it from being downloaded for any other use than within the Hardware. When distributed within the Hardware, the embedded Font Software shall by all means be protected against copy.
  • the right to use the Font to manufacture, print, emboss, engrave commercial and/or promotional merchandise such as apparel, accessories, presentation packaging, letterform products/objects, etc.
  • the right to use the Font within video or film work for broadcast, theater, streaming…
  • the right to use the Font on one (1) production server. Server use is defined as the embedding of the Font Software on a CMS or web server that can be accessed via the Internet or other external network system, for the dynamic generation of analog and digital documents of any sort.

Gallery Type may withdraw any license from a Licensee in the case that the Licensee uses the Font to spread such messages. The license fee shall not be refunded. Any licensing or use in the frame of a political campaign or organisation (slogans, logos, claims etc.) must be the subject of a prior written agreement from Gallery Type. Please contact info@gallerytype.com.

13

COPYRIGHT

The Licensee agrees that the Font Software and Fonts embodied herein are copyright-protected, and that all intellectual, moral and property rights including copyrights, design rights and other rights to the Font Software and the Fonts (including the design, software, artwork, the metadata, Font Software etc.) rest solely with Gallery Type. 1
Scope and Definitions

1.1 These General Terms and Conditions (“GTC”) apply to all contracts for the purchase, testing and use of font software and related digital content (“Fonts”) that a consumer or entrepreneur (“Customer”) concludes with Gallery Type via the online shop operated by Gallery Type. The Customer’s own general terms and conditions shall not apply unless expressly agreed in writing.

1.2 Gallery Type is a font foundry and publisher of exclusive typefaces and a provider of services related to type design and font engineering. Gallery Type operates an online shop (“Webshop”) where licenses for the use of Fonts can be purchased.

1.3 “Consumer” means any natural person entering into a legal transaction for purposes that predominately are outside their trade or profession. “Entrepreneur” means any natural or legal person or partnership with legal capacity acting in the exercise of their trade or profession.

1.4 For the purchase, testing and use of Fonts, these GTC apply together with the applicable End User License Agreement (“EULA”). In case of conflicts regarding the scope of use, the EULA prevails.

1.5 These GTC are deemed accepted upon order submission.

2
Conclusion of Contract; Customer Account

2.1 The prices displayed on the Gallery Type website for each Font and license model—particularly the price based on the selected Company Size—constitute a binding offer by Gallery Type to conclude a contract.

2.2 By completing the ordering process and clicking the button that finalises the purchase (e.g. “Pay Now”), the Customer accepts this offer. Upon acceptance, a binding contract (“License Agreement”) is concluded and the Customer acquires the non-exclusive, perpetual rights of use to the purchased Fonts as defined in the EULA.

2.3 After the order is completed, the Customer receives an order confirmation and immediate access to download the purchased Fonts. Delivery is made exclusively by electronic download.

2.4 Order processing is carried out by email and automated systems. The Customer must ensure that the provided email address is correct, functional and properly configured (especially regarding spam filters).

2.5 Creating a Customer account (“Account”) is optional but allows redownloads and invoice management. Only the information requested during registration must be provided.

2.6 All Customer information must be truthful and kept up to date.

3
Subject Matter of Contract; Delivery of Fonts

3.1 The contract covers the provision of Font software and associated digital content in electronic form and the granting of usage rights as set out in these GTC and the EULA.

3.2 Fonts, license models, scope of use and prices are described in the Webshop. License types exceeding standard tiers (e.g. corporate or custom licenses) require an individual agreement.

3.3 After successful payment, the Customer receives an order confirmation, a download link or download access, and an invoice.

3.4 No physical delivery occurs.

3.5 The Customer is responsible for downloading and backing up the Fonts and keeping login or download credentials confidential.

4
Rights of Use; EULA; Trial Fonts

4.1 Fonts are protected by copyright. Gallery Type retains all intellectual property rights.

4.2 By purchasing a license, the Customer obtains a non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the Fonts as defined by the selected license tier and the EULA.

4.3 The Customer may not, unless permitted by the EULA or law:

  • sell, sublicense, lend, lease or otherwise distribute the Fonts;

  • make the Fonts publicly available in a way that enables extraction;

  • decompile, modify or convert the Fonts, except where legally permitted.

4.4 Rights of use take effect only after full payment. Pre-payment access is provisional and may be revoked.

4.5 Trial Fonts are provided only for evaluation purposes and may not be used for commercial or final production unless explicitly allowed.

4.6 Licenses may be purchased on behalf of a third party. The Customer must ensure the licensee receives and accepts the EULA.

4.7 Gallery Type appreciates crediting in publications (voluntary).

5
Right of Withdrawal

If the Customer is a Consumer, the statutory right of withdrawal for digital content expires once Gallery Type has begun supplying the Fonts after the Customer has expressly agreed to immediate digital delivery and acknowledged the loss of the withdrawal right. After download access is provided, no cancellation or refund is possible.

6
Prices and Payment

6.1 Prices in the Webshop are net prices unless stated otherwise; the final price including VAT (where applicable) is shown before checkout.

6.2 Customers outside the EU may incur additional bank or currency fees.

6.3 Payment methods are shown during checkout and processed by third-party payment providers.

6.4 Gallery Type’s claim to payment arises upon conclusion of the License Agreement.

7
Provision of Fonts

7.1 Fonts are provided exclusively by download or email.

7.2 Download access is normally granted immediately after payment.

7.3 Gallery Type may limit how long download links remain accessible. Customers must back up downloaded files.

8
Warranty for Defects

8.1 Statutory warranty rules apply except as modified herein. Claims relating to artistic design are excluded.

8.2 The Customer must inspect the Fonts promptly. Obvious defects must be reported within 14 days.

8.3 Gallery Type may remedy defects by providing updated or replacement files. Defective versions must be deleted.

8.4 For Customers acting as entrepreneurs, warranty claims expire twelve (12) months after the Fonts have been made available, unless mandatory law requires longer limitation periods.

9
Liability

9.1 Gallery Type is liable only:

  • for intent and gross negligence,

  • for injury to life, body or health,

  • for fraudulent concealment,

  • where a guarantee has been assumed, or

  • under mandatory product liability law.

9.2 For slight negligence, liability is limited to essential contractual duties and predictable, typical damages.

9.3 These limitations apply also to legal representatives and vicarious agents.

10
Data Protection

10.1 Personal data is processed according to applicable data protection laws. Details are provided in the Privacy Policy.

10.2 If Customer provides third-party personal data, they must ensure lawful transfer and, where required, consent.

10.3 The Customer confirms that any transferred personal data was lawfully obtained.

11
Applicable Law and Jurisdiction

11.1 German law applies, excluding CISG. For Consumers, statutory consumer protections of their home country remain unaffected.

11.2 For Entrepreneurs, the exclusive place of jurisdiction is the registered office of Gallery Type; Gallery Type may also sue at the Customer’s general jurisdiction.

12
lternative Dispute Resolution

12.1 The EU online dispute resolution platform is available at ec.europa.eu/odr.

12.2 Gallery Type does not participate in consumer arbitration proceedings.

13
Final Provisions

13.1 If any provision of these GTC becomes invalid, the remaining provisions remain unaffected.
